1998 Portland Marathon
7:00 A.M. start of marathon. Based on what it looked like at this point I thought it was going to rain all day. In all 10 thousand runners entered in the family of events on marathon day. I thought the marathon had more people than I've seen before.
Entering the gates for China town after running less than 1 mile. I alway enjoy this part. At this point in the run there are so many people that it can be hard to maintain a pace.
This shot shows the train which caused a real problem for some of the runners. I was running with a group doing 9 min/miles and at the six mile mark this train came by and blocked all the runers which were 200 yards behind me. The real problem was that the train crossed the route again but this time it blocked the elite runners (probably the 25th or so runner).
OK, so I'm not a staff photographer for National Geographic. This shot shows an elite woman marathoner as she makes her move at mile 13.
The hill up to St. Johns bridge. This hill seemed longer than I had remembered.
Top of the St. John's bridge. I always enjoy running over this bridge.
At about mile 20 you get a clear view of downtown Portland. And downtown Portland looks awfully far away. I find it better not to think you're going to run all that way.
In this shot I wanted to capture what it's like to run the last 100 yards into the finishing chute. However as I was running I also wanted to have time of < 3:40 (and it was 3:39:30). It was pretty frantic to run the last bit and also get my camera out for the shot. This shot may have correctly captured my state of mind.
